Why Blood Pressure Checks Are Important

High blood pressure significantly increases the risk of having a heart attack or stroke, but early detection and treatment can help people live longer, healthier lives. Cardiovascular disease is the second most common cause of premature death in England, affecting seven million people.

Did you know?

One in four premature deaths are caused by cardiovascular disease. The NHS aims to prevent 150,000 strokes and heart attacks over the next ten years through early detection and prevention.

What Happens During Your Check?

Our healthcare professional will measure your blood pressure using professional equipment. Based on your readings, we will:

  • Normal:We'll promote healthy behaviours to help you maintain good cardiovascular health
  • High:We'll offer Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM) if available or refer you to your GP
  • Very High:We'll urgently refer you to see your GP within 24 hours

Important Information

All blood pressure readings are sent to your general practice so your medical records can be updated and appropriate action taken. This ensures continuity of care and helps your GP make informed decisions about your health.
